WIND BAND (look uder CHRISTMAS for Christmas band music)
Danserye - Renaissance Dances - Susato arr. Alun Cook
Full Band but with option for smaller ensemble

This collection of Renaissance Dances were arranged for a concert in the American Cathedral in Paris in 1987 for the Trinity Wind Orchestra. The ensemble was divided into small consorts and spread around the Cathedral so that the audience would be unaware from which direction the sound would be emerging for each movement. The conductor stood at the rear of the building out of sight of the audience, co-ordinating the performance and directing the "full band" movements whilst the smaller ensembles played their movements autonomously.

The original arrangement was for a small ensemble as follows: 4 Flautists doubling piccolos and recorders, 1 Oboe, 3 Bb Clarinets, 1 Bass Clarinet, 1 Alto Sax, 1 Tenor Sax, 2 Trumpets, 2 Horns, 1 Trombone, 1 Tuba and a percussionist. This version has been expanded to accommodate members of a full band but the piece may be played by the original sized ensemble. I have offered some scoring options in the small ensembles. The optional recorder parts may be given to your expert recorder players if you have them, rather than assuming that the flautists can also play the recorder.

I Was Glad - Parry arr. Alun Cook
For performance with or without a choir.

Parry's anthem "I was glad when they said unto me" uses verse from Psalm 122 found in the Book of Common Prayer of 1662. It is famously used at every coronation since 1902. The history of using this text goes back to 1685 when Henry Purcell wrote a setting for the coronation of James 2.

This arrangement has been written so that it may be performed with or without a choir. If performed with a small choir you will have to be careful with balance. The section from letter E to letter J is often omitted when performed other than at a coronation. The "Vivat Regina" passage welcomes the new monarch and is changed slightly at every coronation. It is a great shame to exclude this lovely section of the work, so it is scored so that it may be played without choir if required.

The anthem is also available in a version for 10 piece brass ensemble

Jerusalem - Parry arr. Alun Cook
In the original key so fine for use with choirs.

The combination of Parry's beautiful melody and delicious harmonies with Williams Blake's memorable poem can bring tears to the eyes of many a stiff-upper-lipped Englishman. It is a staple of any Summer promenade concert.

Movements from Pictures at an Exhibition - Mussorgsky arr. Alun Cook

These arrangements of movements from Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" aim to fill the gaps in what has already been written for Wind Band. Other versions have movements missing or suddenly go into bizarre keys (a semitone difference from the original between two movements that are supposed to segue)! It is pretty difficult for anyone to claim that they haven't been influence by the Ravel orchestration, but I have tried to set that aside and work from the original piano score.

The Gnome - The Gnome is a difficult beast, both for the musicians to negotiate the awkward twisting phrasing, and for the conductor to control the starting and stopping and create a feeling of suspense, but well worth the effort.

Baba Yaga and The Great Gate of Kiev - Baba Yaga is not a pleasant character. The slavic myths vary but generally portrays an evil grandmother who flies through the air in a mortar using a pestle as a rudder (she lives in the Hut on Chickens legs), snarling and nasty! The movement segues into The Great Gate of Kiev - an Heroic Gate of Majesty in the city of Kiev. This is an exhausting blow, but very popular with audiences and the climax of Mussorgsky's parade of pictures.

CLARINET AND WIND BAND TOP
Clarinet Carillon - Alun Cook
for Solo Clarinet and Wind Band

A showpiece for Clarinet with Wind Band accompaniment. I had intended the solo part to be of about Grade 6 standard but it has turned out to be rather harder, but it is definitely fun to play. The band accompaniment includes plenty of cues for missing instruments, and having a good xylophone player is an advantage. Clarinet Carillon is also available for Clarinet and Piano. The MP3 (at the moment) is just a midi recording but because of the limitations of some sound cards, it may give a better idea of how the piece should sound.

Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso - C. Saint-Saëns arr. Alun Cook
for Solo Clarinet and Wind Band

A showcase for Clarinet transcribed from Saint-Saëns’ original for solo violin and orchestra. The piece is in its original key so you have to cope with B major in the final section. There are some difficult sections which may require practise and, as you will hear on the MP3, I found some sections challenging. A more accomplished performer might like to take some sections a little faster.

There is also a version for Alto Saxophone and Wind Band elsewhere on this website, but the versions are not interchangeable.

SAXOPHONE AND WIND BAND TOP
Boris Goes to Dublin - Alun Cook
Alto Saxophone and Wind Band

"Boris" has a challenging solo part and is written as an "audience friendly" showpiece for Alto Saxophone and Wind Band. The band parts are well cued as bands vary in size, and could be played by quite a small ensemble. If you have full band you may need to lighten the scoring in places. The solo part is a good Grade 8 (UK) standard. The band parts are not excessively difficult.

"Boris" can also be found on this site with an orchestral accompaniment, a concert piece with piano, and in an arrangement for Saxophone Octet. The MP3 file has a "live" saxophonist playing with a synthesized accompaniment but it gives a good feel for the piece.

Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso - C. Saint-Saëns arr. Alun Cook
Alto Saxophone and Wind Band

A virtuosic showcase for your star Alto Saxophonist, transcribed from the original for solo violin. The band parts are not too difficult. The key has been changed and the solo part adapted to accommodate the more limited range of the saxophone and the need to take occasional breaths. There is one top 'A' and a 'G#' (with alternatives given) and an F# key would be most useful, but otherwise the solo part is dramatic but very playable.

The MP3 gives a good impression of what is possible - I am a little rusty and my scales are not as smooth as I would like (and I wish I had a top 'F#' key), and I would expect a more accomplished performer to take some sections a little faster.

There is also a distillation for Alto Saxophone and Piano to be found elsewhere on this website

FRENCH HORN AND WIND BAND TOP
Horn and Hounds - Alun Cook
French Horn and Wind Band

This is a show piece for French Horn and Band but it is not very difficult. Aimed at the developing player you might think of it as a junior "Hunter's Moon". The band parts are well cued so you can do without the more unusual instruments.

"Horn and Hounds" is also available for Horn and Piano
