These selected Preludes and Fugues from Book 1 of the "Well-tempered Klavier" are arranged in suitable keys for the instruments, rather than necessarily their original keys. Bach gave only occasional indications of speed but interpretation amongst pianists vary wildly, for instance the recordings of Fugue 19 vary from a relaxed dotted-crotchet=72 to a manic dotted-crotchet=102, and likewise Prelude 18 performances range between quaver=90 and quaver=150. Some performers play metronomically as if automatons, whilst others think they are playing Mahler, so any interpretation seems to be accepted. My suggested speeds reflect my performances on the accompanying MP3s.

Although these five trios are designed for students who have not yet ventured into the upper register, they are also very effective little concert pieces for players of a higher standard and all present rhythmic or chromatic challenges and are fun to play!. They are compact gems!

Fresh Air - Bright and breezy, simple to play and a good launching point to introduce ensemble playing. Contains mild syncopation and a few chromatic notes.

Sir Graham d'Azincourt - In Swing rhythm with some syncopation and a walking bass section. Mostly sectional rhythms with a more independent top part.

Funky Paula - Written for a super teacher who wanted something "funky" for her young students. In swing style, with a bluesy feel. Top part is hardest. Parts are quite independent. Works really well with more advanced players.

In Search of ....... - Mysterious and atmospheric, designed to be played with some rhythmic flexibility to develop listening skills. From semiquavers to semibreves, but nothing difficult. Some chromaticism.

Here, In the Morning Light - Contrasting sections from a light rock to a more atmospheric middle section. Introduces contrasting articulation and dynamics. Nothing difficult except the independence of the parts.
