CLARINET AND PIANO |
El Clarinete Rifirrafe
- Alun Cook
Clarinet and Piano
Originally written as a showpiece for a solo clarinettist within a single reed ensemble (and later in a Clarinet Choir), this transcription is an adaptation for the soloist with a piano accompaniment. This "skirmish" in a Spanish style makes a great showpiece and provides a moderate challenge for the soloist who needs to be agile and in control of their high tuning. It is highly melodic and audience friendly and might bring out the Carmenesque in you! |
Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso
- C. Saint-Saëns arr. Alun Cook
Clarinet and Piano
A showcase for Clarinet transcribed from Saint-Saëns’ original for solo violin and orchestra. The piece is in its original key so you have to cope with B major in the final section. There are some difficult sections which may require practise and, as you will hear on the MP3, I found some sections challenging. A more accomplished performer might like to take some sections a little faster. This is a distillation of my version for Clarinet and Wind Band, found elsewhere on this website.

Wieldy Waltz
- Alun Cook
Clarinet and Piano
Wieldy Waltz is a light and jazzy piece which the composer always thinks would make a good television theme. It also has educational mileage as it is in a good range and addresses swing rhythms. For the Clarinet it is not too technically demanding but the Piano part is more taxing. Wieldy Waltz is also available for Flute and Piano, and for Alto Saxophone and Piano.

ABC Rocking Week
- Alun Cook
Clarinet and Piano
- for the very elementary player - left hand only!
Designed for elementary clarinet students, these 5 short concert pieces help to develop the good rocking action that is essential for fluency onto the 'A' key. The pieces use the left hand only and should be used as soon as the 'A' is required. They also provide an introduction to dynamics in an obvious and humorous way.

ABC Stepping Down
- Alun Cook
Clarinet and Piano
- for the elementary player (below the 'break')
Stepping Down is a set of 12 concert pieces for clarinet and piano for the elementary player. Developed during the composer's many years of teaching, these should easily be managed during the pupil's first term of learning. The pieces only assume knowledge of the left-hand (middle C to A) and gradually increases the range downwards through B, Bb, A and G. The material links in with the ABC Clarinet Tutor with some extended tunes and new material. Articulation is introduced to encourage a more musical performance as the player increases in confidence - and 'Swing' in the final piece.
